May 19, 2004 - Marcus Cousin Interview

Marcus Cousin - (Randallstown HS, Post). We reported on May 14th that Marcus had given a verbal committment to Seton Hall and would subsequently send in his signe LOI. On Sunday May 16, 2004 we spent time with Marcus Cousin and his family to understand some of what went into the decision making process to choose to Seton Hall. As a result of our conversation, it was obvious that it was family based decision that ultimately came down to personality fit, opportunity for playing time, comfort with school, comfort with coaching staff, and location to family. According to Marcus "location was a factor, "I want my family to be able to see me play". Mrs Cousin stated that she and Mr Cousin "were more focused on Marcus going to a good school and location was a secondary concern. (Her) contingent of family and friends were going to find a way to be able to attend some of his games no matter what school Marcus attended". By attending Seton Hall, Marcus' sister (a freshman attending Morgan State University) will be able to visit on some of the weekends.

Mr and Mrs Cousin are originally from Oklahoma and Mr Cousin attended Oklahoma University and Mrs Cousin attended Oklahoma State University which are rivals to Nebraska, the school that Seton Hall beat out for Marcus services. Despite attending rival schools Marcus' parents were impressed with Nebraska but more impressed with Coach Orr.

According to Mr Cousin, Coach Garrett and Coach Orr were the main coaches recruiting Marcus eventhough all of the coaches had a hand in the recruiting process. The Cousin family became aware of Coach Orr and Seton Hall's seriousness in Marcus when Coach Orr spent time with Mrs Cousin during a west coast trip. Mrs Cousin was on an extended trip to the West Coast attending to some family business and Coach Orr informed Marcus and Mr Cousin of his intentions to meet Mrs Cousin during his west coast trip. Marcus was "surprised" and Mr Cousin was "impressed". According to Mr. Cousin "Coach Orr is the only coach to meet Mrs Cousin face to face. During the visit, Coach Orr was given insight into the importance of Marcus faith/religion and how he was raised. After the visit, Mrs Cousin concluded that Coach Orr's personality fit perfectly with Marcus.

According to Marcus a telephone conversation with Justin Cerasoli (one of Seton Hall's other incoming freshmen) helped his decision. During his visit to Seton Hall, Marcus met with members of the team and played pickup basketball with them "it felt like (he) instantly fit in".

Prior to the Charlie Weber tournament when Marcus proved he should be recruited at the highest level, his main interest had come from Fordham, Manhattan, Marshall, Siena, Albany and Nebraska. However none of these schools offered a scholarship prior to Charlie Weber. As Marcus dwindled his list down to two schools several more schools (Penn State, Virginia Tech, Georgetown, St Johns, Boston College, Maryland, UTEP and and Georgia) tried to find their way into the race for his services however Seton Hall and Nebraska remained the final two schools.

Not many people thought that Marcus would generate this type of attention, except maybe for Mrs Cousin who had a sixth sense that this could happen considering Marcus won't be 18 until December and he didn't have the type of senior season (due to injury) that he wanted. When asked for any closing words to our interview Marcus stated that coach Orlando "Bino" Ransome "deserves alot of the credit for him having this opportunity". Coach Ransome spent a significant amount of time working with Marcus and providing constant support for his development. Between now and June 7, the day Marcus heads to Seton Hall for the summer session, he will be "working on getting stronger, increasing his vertical, and tightening up his shot".

From CharmCityHoops.com, keep up the hard work Marcus!!

May 14, 2004 - Marcus Cousin decided to attend...

Marcus Cousin - (Randallstown HS, Post). The Cousin family confirmed to us that they committed to Seton Hall about 5:00Pm this evening. Coach Orr topped off a superb official visit by going the extra mile and visiting with Marcus' mother who was on west coast attending to some family business. Seton Hall secured Marcus services by employing a very classy recruiting strategy! Stay tuned for interview Marcus ...

May 9, 2004 - Marcus Cousin Visit to Nebraska

Marcus Cousin - (Randallstown HS, Post). The visit to Nebraska was very impressive for Marcus. The trip was well organized and structured. Marcus got to meet and play pick up basketball with Marcus Neal (Annapolis HS graduate) and the rest of the team. Marcus also got to meet the academic and athletic staff and agina was very impressed. All in all another very IMPRESSIVE trip for Marcus.
Nebraska and Seton Hall are two of the final four schools Marcus will be considering, the remaining two schools will be decided toward the end of the week. Virginia Tech, Providence, Fordham, Boston College and several others want to be in the final four for Marcus.

May 4, 2004 - Marcus Cousin Visit to Michigan State

Marcus Cousin - (Randallstown HS, Post). The visit to Michigan State went very well. They were very impressed with the Steve Smith Academic Center for the Student Athletes and the Breslin Center (who still play play on the same court that Magic Johnson played on in the old arena). Marcus enjoyed running pickup gameswith the team on his visit.
Marcus is still sceduled to take his visit to Nebraska this coming weekend and his coming visits to Providence and Fordham.
Maryland has again expressed interest in attending an open gym/workout to see Marcus in action this week. Penn State is hoping to get in the mix and UNC Charlotte is still under consideration.
It was only about six weeks ago Marcus was visiting Coach Keats and Hargrave as a prospective post grad student...

May 3, 2004 - Maurice Barksdale Update

Maurice barksdale - (Dunbar HS/Blinn JC, PG). Maurice completed a visit to University of Denver over the weekend. Southern Mississipi has recently inquired about his availability.

April 29, 2004 - Marcus Cousin Workout concellation

Marcus Cousin - (Randallstown HS, Post). We previously reported that Georgia and Maryland were scheduled to attend a workout session to watch Marcus. The workout session was canceled.

April 29, 2004 - Marcus Cousin Recruiting Update

Marcus Cousin - (Randallstown HS, Post). Recruiting for Marcus has not slowed down, more schools are taking visits to watch Marcus workout. Georgia and Maryland are the two latest schools to express interest in Marcus. Both schools will be attending a workout session to watch Marcus. Marcus recently took an official visit to Seton Hall. Marcus' father characterized the visit to Seton Hall as "superb and excellent, a class A visit". Coach Orr and staff did a top notch job during their visit. Michigan State is next on the agenda, Marcus will be taking an official visit to MSU this weekend. The third official visit will be to Nebraska the following weekend. Marcus will take his last two offical visits to Providence and Fordham in the coming weeks. More to come on Marcus' recruiting in the following days...

In our earlier assesment of Marcus, we gave him a freshman impact grade of L+/M. However his unlimited potential, improved performance, and timing of the recruiting season has raised his stock in a BIG way. Just wait until his sophomore season as a college basketball player, his improvement will be could be dramatic!!

April 19, 2004 - Marcus Cousin in the midst of Baltimores biggest recruiting battle since Rudy Gay

Marcus Cousin - (Randallstown HS, Post). Big 10, Big East, A10, Big 12 and Conference USA schools are battling over Marcus. Marcus has shown marked improvement in his game and colleges are recognizing that he will only get better. Prior to the Charlie Weber tournament, University of Albany, Manhattan, Siena and Fordham were the main suitors. Since the Charlie Weber tournament major programs have begun a fierce recruiting battle for Marcus. Marcus has been extended scholarship offers to join Michigan State, Fordham University, Seton Hall, Providence, Nebraska, and UNC Charlotte. In home visits were recently made by Fordham and Seton Hall. Michigan State will be making an in home visit later this week. Nebraska, UNC Charlotte, and Providence all made offers to Marcus on Friday after watching him workout. Marcus is scheduled to make visits to Michigan State, UNC Charlotte, Seton Hall, Providence, Fordham and Nebraska. MAAC conference contenders Siena and Manhattan have not been eliminated. from consideration despite the offers from the larger programs. By the end of the week, Marcus will have trimmed his list to his official five schools.

April 17, 2004 - Baltimore Players at Charlie Weber

Jermaine Bolden - (Douglas HS, point guard). Jermaine is reportedly heading to Prince Avenue Prep.

April 18, 2004 - Darnell Harris Commits and Interest in Maurice Barksdale

Darnell Harris - (St Frances HS, guard). While on his official visit to LaSalle University, Darnell made it official and committed to become an Explorer.

Maurice Barksdale - (Dunbar HS/Blinn JC, guard). American University and Tulsa University are making their interest known.

February 8, 2004 - Darnell Harris and Gordon Brown

Darnell Harris - (St Frances HS, guard). Two A10 schools attended the St Frances vs Mt St. Joe game to watch Darnell Harris. George Washington (Coach Hobbs) and LaSalle (Coach Houston) watched Darnell play with passion. Darnell, a normally reserved player, rarely shows emotion on the court but there was something special about this game to him. He played a very good game, never forced his shot and helped his team to victory. I anticipate Darnell having two A10 offers within the next two weeks. The question will be who will join Fordham in extending Darnell another A10 offer. Conference USA team, East Carolina is interested in bring Darnell in for an official visit.

Gordon Brown - (St Frances HS, guard). Gordon is a top juco prospect and showed why he is coveted by some of the top juco programs that recruit the Baltimore area against Mt St Joe. Gordon hit big shot after big shot including a couple of threes that helped seal the victory for St. Frances. Polk Junior College in Florida was in attendance watching Gordon perform. Gordon could join former Baltimore Select teammates Laronja Owens and Josh Johnson in Florida next year.

January 15, 2004 - Darnell Harris Update

Darnell Harris - (St Frances HS, guard). Darnell has an A10 offer on the table, from Fordham University! We attended the St Frances/Calvert Hall game and Travis Lyons (former Dematha product and current Assistant Coach at Fordham Universty) was in attendance checking out their prime recruting target!!

January 15, 2004 - Maurice Barksdale Update

Maurice Barksdale - (Dunbar HS, Blinn JC, guard). Major Congratulations goes out to Maurice! He earned a 3.33 GPA in his first semester of college. The most amazing part of this accomplishment is that he carried 18 credits!!

The College of William and Mary, Fordham and Long Island are all sniffing.

December 30, 2003 - Exclusive Jerome Johnson Update

Jerome Johnson - (Dunbar HS, Bullis School/IMG Academy, post). CharmCityHoops has been granted exclusive recruiting information by Jerome Johnson and we are proud to present it here first!

Jerome's list of schools include Clemson, Auburn, Cincinatti, Utah, Virginia Tech, University of South Alabama ("USA"), Depaul, Nebraska and Penn State. Clemson, USA, Penn State, and Depaul offered, Cincinatti, Auburn and Virginia Tech all want Jerome to make a visit. Jerome visited Nebraska (his only official visit made to date) in the fall, Nebraska offered a scholarship and is waiting for Jerome to make a decision. Over the next month Jerome and his family will be planning which other visits he will take. CharmCityHoops will have exclusive information on those visits!!

Jerome is doing very well in school carrying over a 3.2 GPA at IMG and has recently taken the SAT and ACT. Jerome had a very strong showing at the War on the Shore proving to colleges that he has all of the post skills desired by top programs. Keep up the strong work Jerome!

December, 2003 - Recruiting update Update

Maurice Barksdale - (Dunbar HS/Blinn JC, point guard). Maurice is the second leading scorer on the 20th ranked junior college team average 14 points and 4.5 assist while shooting over 50% from the floor. Fordham and Long Island University are really interested in Maurice and Pac-10 school University of Washington is sniffing.

Marcus Cousin - (Randallstown HS, post). The ever improving Marcus has gotten interest from Siena and Central Connecticut State. Both schools are home to former Randallstown players, Antoine "Scoop" Jordan an Antonio McMillion. Fordham and University of Albany have also inquired about his services.

Darnell Harris - (St Frances, guard). This will be a very busy spring for Darnell. Boston College, Fordham, and very recently Temple University have shown interest in Darnell. We attended the game against Aberdeen and in attendance was the Hampton University, a school that Darnell unofficially visited.

November 22, 2003 - War on the Shore Update

Jerome Johnson - (Dunbar HS/IMG Academy, post). Jerome had the game of the tournament as he led IMG into battle against Notre Dame Prep. Notre Dame won the closely fought battle as IMG fought and clawed behind Jerome's blocked shots, put backs and baseline jumpers. Jerome evenutally fouled out and Ramel Bradley attempted to finish what Jerome started unfortunately Notre Dame came out with the victory.

Jack McClinton - (Calvert Hall/South Kent, guard). Jack led South Kent into battle with his hot shooting. Jack torched Blair Academy for approximately 35 points, with over 20 coming in the second half. South Kent lost there Sunday game but Jack still proved he was a warrior by scoring about 20 points in that game with one eye. In a freak accident before the game Jack was hit in the eye by some debris thrown at someone else.

Tavon Nelson - (Lake Clifton HS/South Kent, forward). Tavon did what he is known for doing, playing tight defense, shooting big shots in the paint and from three point land and grabbing rebounds. Rudy Gay, Paris Carter, Chester Frazier and several other Cecil Kirk regulars came out to support Tavon and Jack in their Saturday and Sunday game.

November 17, 2003 - Conversation with Jajuan Robinson

CCH - Congratulations on committing to Providence College what were the other schools you were considering?

Ice - I also considered Middle Tennesse State, UConn was making a push, and University of Washington was also interested.

CCH - How did you decide Providence was the college.

Ice - I liked the opportunity to play in the Big East, I liked the campus, they have a really good team, a strong recruiting class, and I REALLY liked the coaching staff. I also get the chance to play with Gerald again.

CCH - What aspects of your game have you been working on.

Ice - I've been working on getting stronger and I've been working on my handle, making it tighter. I have gotten stronger and have more bounce, I am ready to show it.

CCH - What are the strongest parts of your game.

ICE - I have a strong stutter step pull up, its something that alot of Baltimore guys have. I also have a strong hesitation move and more bounce.

CCH - Who was your toughest competition this summer.

Ice - Probably JR Smith and Jordan Farmer. I matched up against JR Smith and scored 27 points 7 steals and 6 rebounds JR Smith had 19 points. We won that tournament at Penn State (the Charlie Weber tournament)going undefeated

We played Jordan Farmer in Las Vegas and I scored something like 43 points. We were down by something like 25 points in the 4th quarter and I hit 4 (consecutive) threes but I got fouled on the fourth three and they took it away from me. I eventually fouled out and we lost by 6 points. Both of them are real good, I liked both of their games. CCH - Anything else you would like to add before I let you go.

Ice - I am just focused on getting better and I want to help Providence next year.

CCH - Congratulations again and keep making us proud.

November 17, 2003 - Jajuan Robinson Signs LOI

Jajuan Robinson - (Dunbar HS/Prince Avenue Prep, point guard). Jajuan had such a good visit with Providence College that he left a signed LOI with the coaching staff. This is a good pickup for Providence. Jajuan will be reunited with former Dunbar teammate Gerald Brown (before Gerald transferred to Douglass HS and subsequently Hargrave Military Academy).

Congratulations to Jajuan and Providence College.

November 13, 2003 - Jajuan Robinson Analysis

Jajuan Robinson - (Dunbar HS/Prince Avenue Prep, point guard). We were asked by a UConn reporter to due an in depth analysis on Ice and the level of basketball he is capable of playing, in particular could he play in the Big East.

Ice is very talented and capable of playing at any level of D1 basketball. He has great instincts and awareness and can put up points in a hurry. He is also capable of running a complicated offense efficiently.

Despite his thin frame he can play in the tough Big East. He has the mentality and talent to get the job done in the Big East as a freshman starter.

Ice is as quick as they come and is a tremendous athlete. He has an accurate trigger and plays to win! The most impressive part of his game is his competitive nature and his willingness to work to win. I have told several stories about Ice verbally correcting his teams' defensive set in middle of running the offense. I have also told stories about how someone stole the ball from him and how he punished the defender the rest of the game.

If he goes to a Big East school I think he could be the freshman surprise of the conference ( not necessarily R.O.Y. but a surprise to those that didn't take him seriously), if he goes to Middle Tenn State then we are talking about a sophomore conference player of the year candidate. My ifs are predicated on him maintaining his work ethic and love and desire for basketball.

November 13, 2003 - Interest in Jajuan Robinson picks up

Jajuan Robinson - (Dunbar HS/Prince Avenue Prep, point guard). We reported earlier that Jajuan has interest from Big East and ACC schools, that interest has increased and now includes PAC 10 and Conference USA. East Carolina has expressed interest as well as Washington University. These schools are giving him alot to think about as he prepares for his upcoming visit to Providence.

November 10, 2003 - Jajuan Robinson Visits and Davon Allen Update

Jajuan Robinson - (Dunbar HS/Prince Avenue Prep, point guard). Jajuan has had a strong preseason showing with Prince Avenue Prep. In four scrimmages, against two jucos, one NAIA school, and one high school, Jajuan averaged approximately 20 points per game and 8 assists per game. Jajuan led Prince Avenue to victory in all four scrimmages as the leading scorerer or the second leading scorer.

Jajuan is hoping to visit Providence College and Middle Tennessee State in the next couple of weeks. Clemson as well as other Big East and Big 12 schools are making serious inquiries. Jajuan is taking care of his academic responsibilities and is expected to be a full qualifier.

Davon Allen - (Redemption Prep/Prince Avenue Prep, post). Davon has had a successful preseason as the number one post option for Prince Avenue Prep. Davon has blocked shots, rebounded and scored from the post for Prince Avenue. Davon is taking care of his classroom responsibilities and is expected to be a full qualifier. Binghampton is still interested in Davon with University of Albany making inquiries!

November 4, 2003 - Jack McClinton Chooses Siena

Jack McClinton - (Calvert Hall HS/South Kent Prep, guard). Its official, Jack McClinton has verbaled to Siena.

We spoke to Jack's father this morning just minutes after they informed the other schools involved with Jack. They felt the situation and timing was right! Congratulations to Jack and Siena.

November 3, 2003 - Jack McClinton's Work Pays Off

Jack McClinton - (Calvert Hall HS/South Kent Prep, guard). Jack had a very busy October making official visits to schools on three consecutive weekends. Jack first visited Central Connecticut State and where he spent time with fellow Baltimore native Antonio McMillion. Jack's second visit was to Hartford where he spent time with Aaron Cook, another Baltimore native. Jack's last visit was to Siena, where he spent time with Antoine "Scoop" Jordan, another of Baltimore's finest.

Jack has five offers on the table from Towson University, Sacred Heart, Central Connecticut, Hartford, and Siena, and will make a decision in the next week. Jack had positive things to say about all of the programs recruiting him.

We strongly believe Siena will win this recruiting war. It will be very difficult for Jack to say no to Siena's coaching staff, Siena's string of successes and playing in front of 8,000 screaming fans.

October 30, 2003 - Updates

Tavon Nelson - (Lake Clifton HS/South Kent, Forward). We have heard that Nelson has verbaled to College of Charleston and will join fellow Baltimore native Dontaye Draper on the team next year.

Shawn Brown - (Dunbar/Southern HS, post). Shawn has enrolled at Erie Community College in New York.

Harry Brown - (Hercules HS (Oakland, CA)/City College of San Francisco, forward). Harry has dropped 20 pounds and will be the starting small forward as a freshman. Mid Majors are already making inquiries as to Harry's availability for the 2005-2006 season.

Joseph Marshall - (Mervo HS/Labette Juco, shooting guard). Joseph will be a medical redshirt this season.

Antoine Williams - (Mervo HS/Labette Juco, point guard). Antoine will receive playing time this season, likely as the back-up point, in preparation for a big sophomore season.

Joseph Ison - (Douglass HS/Labette Juco, guard/forward). Joseph has fully recovered from his hand injury and is looking at returning to the East Coast to complete his four year degree. Joseph will be graduating in the spring and has generated considerable interest from UMBC and Evansville.

October 14, 2003 - Maurice Barksdale

Maurice Barksdale - (Dunbar HS/Blinn Juco, point guard). The word is getting out that Maurice is still available. Schools such as Arkansas, New Mexico, University of Washington, and San Francisco have made inquiries as to Maurice's avaliability for the 2004-2005 season! Texas A&M made a visit to Blinn and watched Maurice in a workout.

October 7, 2003 - More on Jajuan "Ice" Robinson abd Prince Avenue Prep?

We pulled some research on Prince Avenue Prep and found out they are an up and coming prep powerhouse. Prince Avenue Prep is located approximately 15 minutes from Clemson University and has been on the scene for about 12 years. Ice is joined on the basketball team by another Baltimore native, Davon Allen, as well as several other D1 recruits. Ice and Davon's running mates will be Jar-Rick Boxley, Melvin Crowder, Maurice Petty, and Thomas Garret.

September 15, 2003, Baltimore Juco update

Joseph Ison - (Douglas HS/Labette Juco class of 2004, guard) Joseph broke his wrist at the beginning of the month of September, which slowed workout visits by coaches. It has been rumored that Ison will have a clock issue however that is not expected to be the case. Look for mid-major interest to heat up with Joe once the wrist heals.

Lee Reilford - (Douglas HS/Labette Juco, forward) Lee will be attending NAIA school Central Arkansas for the 2003-2004 season. THis is a good fit for Lee as an older student that will make an immediate impact. Lee averaged approximately 25 ppg and 8 rebounds per game at Labette Last season!

Alfred Washington - (Northeast Mississippi Juco, guard) This will be Washington's first season, he started at Labette in the spring semester of last year but did not play. I was told that he has been impressing the coaching staff at NE Mississippi and will earn a lot of time at the combo spot!

Zeke Johnson - (Dunbar HS/College of Charleston, forward) The well traveled Johnson has found a home for his senior year of basketball at Bowie State!

Marcus Harrison (Mervo class of 2001, forward) It looks like Marcus will have a home with Georgetown College in Kentucky beginning in Spetember 2004. Marcus is planning to take courses this year but not play basketball, therefore leaving him with 3 years of eligibility.
